With over 10 years of experience as an SEO Specialist, I have worked with big multinational clients to small business owners all over the world. Now working as the Head of SEO at Sentius Group.

Keeping up with Google, continuous changes to their algorithm is a challenging task.  But as a skilful expert, there is more. You need to understand the core purpose of Google and what they are trying to achieve over, all the algorithm changes.

Within the industry, there are lots of false promises and bad ethics. Some experts may say SEO is dead or you might think SEO is not working for you. Buts its all depend on finding a professional SEO expert with the right skill set.

What you should expect from an SEO expert?

Don’t fall into marketing tricks like rank within 30 days. There can be projects that can be ranked within a couple of days but its all depend on your keywords and market competition.

A reputable consultant should be open to sharing a brief list of current and former clients and his or her contact information. These references are the best way to verify whether the expert or the agency you are trying to hire is actually worth hiring.

Further to that, he or she should be able to clearly educate you on the process of SEO and what are their strategies and what they are expecting from you to help with the project.  SEO is full of jargons, but professional and experienced SEO experts know how to explain SEO in plain English as much as possible.

From where you should start?

Most SEO consultants start the process with SEO audit, keyword research and competitor audit. Its is important to do an SEO audit to understand your website technical structure and content gaps. If the person/agency you hired send you an automatically generated report with a list of issues and warnings that’s a sign of unprofessional work.

More qualified SEO experts will send you a custom report with detail explanation of your onsite and offsite issues.

The keyword research and competitor analysis also need to be done at the same time. This will give a good understanding of your business and marketplace to the SEO specialist.  If any of these are not a part of the service from the person you hired, think again.

Common Question – When can you rank? / Can you guarantee my website will achieve a number-one ranking on Google?

Rank within 30 Days!!!, you may have seen them before.  SEO is a long term strategy. If you want short term returns please use Google ads. Traffic to your website should gradually increase over time.

If the expert you are going to hire say he can rank all the keywords within the 1st position in Google, my recommendation is to turn and run in the other direction as fast as you can. Although it’s impossible to guarantee a number-one ranking on any search engine, some unethical SEO consultants do make such bogus guarantees.

A reasonable key performance indicator would be something like this.

KPI is to achieve 80% of the targeted keywords on Google first page within the agreed time frame.

This time frame generally 6 months to 12 months. Read more from a recent study on “How long does it take to rank in Google? (A study by Ahrefs)

Request to share the work?

Search Engine optimisation will involve lot of analysis and work on your website and off your website. That is mainly known as On-Site SEO and Off-Site SEO. A reputable SEO expert or an SEO company should share the main updates that they are doing on your site.  Most common changes will be changes to title and meta descriptions and content improvements on your site.

Anything did on your site most of the time you can see and traceable. But many SEO agencies hide the off-site work. Off-site SEO optimisation mainly refers to link building. They need to clearly give you access to the off-site work they have done or sent you a report every month.

Follow the webmaster guidelines?

It’s a very important question to ask. There are bad SEO strategies/tactics used within the industry that can actually rank your site within a short time. But most of the time results are for the short term and you will end up with Google penalty.Google has clearly given guidelines for webmasters to follow. The most common reason for Google penalty is bulk backlinks. If your SEO provider says that they generate thousands of backlinks per month, that is another red flag. An experienced SEO professional will tell you that you do not need thousands of links per month, they will tell you the quality of the link is important than quantity.
